THE FIRE WE CARRY

February 1, 2021

A military coup took place in Myanmar. Internet access was cut, communication channels were blocked, and power was seized overnight. Daily life in Yangon and other cities was disrupted.

Shortly after, large-scale demonstrations began across the country. The Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) gained momentum, with people expressing dissent through public gatherings, symbolic gestures, handmade signs, traditional dress, and creative displays.

For several weeks, protests continued nationwide. Various sectors joined, including healthcare workers, students, artists, and civil servants.

By late February, security forces responded with force. The situation escalated. Protest sites were dispersed, and arrests and casualties were reported.

This visual record documents a specific time in Myanmar’s recent history.

The event continues to shape the present of the country.
